A SLAYER OF DRAGONS

When I was young

I could clearly see

What Lady Future

Was holding for me.

A slayer of dragons,

A happy knight,

A famous man

Known for great might.

The first dragon I met

To my great surprise

Was colored all red,

Even his eyes.

But, I was a slayer

of fierce dragons green;

So, I passed him by

With a stare quite mean.

I next met a yellow one

While on my way,

But, again his skin color

Meant we'd have no fray.

Ah, I met him, though,

One beautiful day,

A snarling green beast;

I asked him to stay.

As fast as I could

I ran for the sword

That I needed to use

To claim my award.

When I got back

To where we had met

My dragon had gone;

No fight did I get.

Now I am old,

No one knows my name.

My children's children

Won't sing of my fame.

The dragons were cruel.

God knows that I tried.

I lived to slay dragons.

I lived till I died

KENNETH E. LANTZ.
